Subject of the Month

As promised, this month we bring you part two of Phil's interview with Dr. John Demartini.  We hope you enjoy it.

Dr. John Demartini, THE SECRET, and Transforming the World

A One on One Interview

Part II

I asked John if there was any particular reason why the film “The Secret” was released at this time.  In other words, is there anything about the present situation in the world that makes the publicizing of these once hidden techniques more appropriate now, than say ten years ago?  He indicated that perhaps the people were in the right place at this time to bring the information to light.  Rhonda Byrne had developed a deep appreciation for the laws of the universe and, with her production company in Australia she had the will and the means to share ways to help people.  It “just so happened” that many of the people that appeared in the film were attending a leadership and transformational meeting in Aspen and Rhonda brought her TV crew to the meeting and was able to tape major portions of the film at that location.  This combined with the modern age of technology and the vast networks represented by the film’s participants enabled the film and its message to reach millions upon millions of people that might otherwise have been left wanting.

Is there a “secret agenda?”  Being a Rosicrucian I could not help but notice the frequency with which the word Rosicrucian flashed between speakers in the film.  John indicated that “wisdom is wisdom” and anyone who searches out universal laws will run into the various lists of secret organizations, some of which have been more popularized than others.  He thought that some of the people connected to the movie were probably Rosicrucian and that he also, in addition to studying Mayan and other mystery teachings had also studied Rosicrucian teachings.  This relatively sequestered order has come to the forefront of late and is receiving greater publicity.  However, John felt that there is only a sincere altruistic desire on the part of those connected to the film to bring much that has been hidden into the mainstream for all to share.

Trying to glance ahead I asked John where he saw the world in 2012 and if he felt that there was enough time, given the current state of world affairs and changing climatic conditions, to turn things around for humanity before possible global disaster.  John’s response should be a lesson and inspiration for all because I do not believe that there is a negative bone left in his body.  John said, “I do not see anything in the world that is going to stop human development. I am certainly not frightened by anything that is going on. I see that there are always two sides to an event. If we look for one side, the down side, we go into doomsday, if we look at the up side we go into fantasy land.  But if we look at both of them we see that nature’s remodeling things and whoever has the clearest, most powerful and certainty in intention is the one that moves it in that direction…I truly believe that there is a field of intelligence that is far greater than our human intellect and I think that it is doing fine and that we are just waking up to it and we’re learning along the way and we remodel ourselves accordingly.  But I really don’t have any fear about what’s going on in the world.  I see a balance.  I see that there is build and destroy.  If you look at the earth from the most ancient times, prior to pre- history, you see that there was spring and fall, somewhere on the world at all times.  Summer and winter is always somewhere, so what you have is build and destroy… And so humans are manifesting the course of build and destroy and remodeling in their cities, their own physiology, in our thoughts we build ourselves up and beat ourselves down. In nature we do it, in our cities we do it; in our environment we do it.  And each time we hone in and learn from it, like a negative feedback system, and hone ourselves into greater awareness and greater contribution.”

Probing this a little further I asked if John if he felt that society had hit rock bottom and that there was a lot of fear in the world.  John said that he did not wake each morning with fear for what is happening in the world.  He said, “I look at things in such a way where I ask how does whatever happened to me, either positive or negative, serve me.” He went on to say that, “Fear is an assumption that you are about to experience more pain than pleasure, more loss than gain, more negative than positive, more challenge than support,  from somebody or yourself.  If we have those perceptions then of course we are going to react and withdraw.  Fear is really an unrealistic expectation. It is wiser to go back and look at the balance of things so the fear dissolves. As Buckminster Fuller said pollution is simply a resource we have yet to find a use for.” John added that we need to find the order hidden in our daily chaos and that despite polarity; he feels that the world has a heart.

We then explored the notion of “divine intelligence.” John said that “to those who believe no proof is necessary, to those who don’t know proof is possible and it is not wise to waste words on those who seek not.” He then mentioned the Demartini Method that is a very profound way of helping people see that the events that are occurring in their life are synchronous, are synthesized and imply and intelligence far greater than our awareness.   He said that he can demonstrate this repeatedly on very deep levels and in such a profound way that it literally involves the physics of life. He sees these concepts growing in strength and in numbers and infiltrating the business, financial, educational and scientific communities.

I could not help but wonder if John felt that he still had any barriers that he personally had yet to cross.  Was there anything in his life that he would like to alter?  The response is a lesson for all since we often go through life beating ourselves up for things we think we should or could have done differently.  John said, “I don’t think of it that way.  No matter what I’ve done or not done I’m worthy of love.  Any time I think I need some kind of fixing it’s because I haven’t looked at myself more thoroughly.  So I don’t put myself into a moral illusion that I need improvement or any of those things.  Albert Einstein said something, if God is omnipotent and omnipresent and omniscient then every human action, reaction and aspiration in life is part of the Divine Plan.  So I don’t look back and say oops, I messed up here, I should have done this or should have done that.  I don’t live that way.

With regard to what changes he would like to see on a worldwide scale he said, “That there would be toilet paper in all the John’s across the world.” On a serious vein he said that he felt that all the people on the entire planet have within them a deep sense of love, they just do not see it.  He indicated that it is not about fixing the world because when you focus on fixing you create the equal and opposite and thereby actually add to the problems.  People need to see the magnificence of themselves and the world in which they live and love people and the world for whom and what it is; this is what creates the transformation.

In bringing up my co-authored book, WAKING GOD I mentioned that we felt (myself and co-author Brian Doe) that religion was perhaps the single most important obstacle people had to overcome in order to utilize the principles of The Secret.  The interview was winding down but we began to discuss this issue in a way that may upset those “who seek not.”  John said, “When we subordinate ourselves to the religious systems we basically stop opening up our religious heart.”  Can you practice The Secret and do ‘Hail Mary’s’ at the same time was my next line of thought.  John replied, “That is contradictory.  I would say that if there is a divine order, divine intelligence and divine love and divine wisdom and beauty in everything, then where is God not?”  He explained that if we think we see some place or person where we think God is not then we must re-examine ourselves and our own perceptions about what we think we see.  If we see something out of order, then it is our job to go back and to look again.

John indicated that any human being we see on the outside reflects what is on our inside.  If there is something that you cannot love about them then there is a part of you that you feel is unworthy of love.  Because the universe is from a single source, all is connected and all is entangled.  This raised the last question concerning the role that our subconscious mind plays in impeding our personal growth.  John said that we develop values based upon what we think we are missing or lacking in life.  If we lack money, we value money; if we lack love, we value love; if we lack a nice home, friends or a good job, we place them in our value system.  Whatever is most perceived as missing, we value.  Review and act upon the world accoding to these values.  Then we see those that appear to have all that we perceive we lack, a.k.a. movie stars, business leaders, etc.  We now subordinate ourselves to them.  We feel that they have what we lack.  By putting these people on a pedestal, we subordinate ourselves to them and their values.  Now our own true values recede into our subconscious.  We are now trying to be someone else, someone we are not.  We attempt to imitate these other people.  Now our world is filled with shoulds and ought to have.  But we still have our own values that become subconscious and another’s values become conscious and we act like somebody we are not.  This raises a moral dilemma.  We now try to do something that is not ours.  Perhaps we try to be a singer, artist or writer and yet we really have no talent for these occupations.  We aspire to be an actor but we have no acting ability.  Now you bang your head against the wall trying to be someone you are not.  You have entered a fantasy world and efforts to manifest that reality are bound to fail.  Our desires must be true and congruent if we are to create our reality utilizing the principles in The Secret.

I asked John if he felt there was a kind of conspiracy to prevent the masses from utilizing the principles of The Secret.  Ever the politician, John answered that if you challenge another’s existing paradigm and value systems they will close it off and try to prevent it.  All is linked and we must learn to love everyone, no matter whom or what they are.   I told John that he should consider being a foreign policy advisor.  He said that several years back he did send a letter to President Bush and to Donald Rumsfeld.  The problem was that when he addressed the letter, he sent it to Ronald Dumsfeld.  He said that it was not intentional.  He did receive a letter back from the President saying that we have everything under control.

Waking God on Location

This month's location is the beautiful Edinburgh, Scotland, which holds a pivotal place in the story, WAKING GOD.  In a differnt approach to bringing you information on the sites of the book, we offer a website that you can visit, as well as an excerpt from that website.  A site that offers a wealth of information on Edinburgh is Wikipedia (click on the word to take yourself there).  Below is a portion from this resource.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh (pronounced /ˈɛdɪnb(ə)rə/; Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Èideann) is the capital of Scotland and its second-largest city. It is situated on the east coast of the central lowlands, on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, on the North sea. It forms the City of Edinburgh council area; the city council area includes urban Edinburgh and a 30sq mile rural area.

It has been the capital of Scotland since 1437 and is the seat of the country's parliament. The city was one of the major centres of the enlightenment (see also Scottish Enlightenment), led by the University of Edinburgh. The Old Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. There are over 4,500 listed buildings within its limits, including around 22,000 listed properties, the most of any city in Britain. In the census of 2001, Edinburgh had a total resident population of 448,624, making it the 7th largest city in the United Kingdom.

Edinburgh is well-known for the annual Edinburgh Festival, a collection of official and independent festivals held annually over about four weeks from early August. The number of visitors attracted to Edinburgh for the Festival, is roughly equal to the settled population of the city. The most famous of these events are the Edinburgh Fringe (the largest performing arts festival in the world), the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Other notable events include the Hogmanay street party (31 December) and the Beltane celebrations (30 April).

The city is one of Europe's major tourist destinations, attracting roughly 13 million visitors a year, and is the second most visited tourist destination in the United Kingdom, after London[1].

This Month’s Review

This month we've decided to add a reader review/interview that we recently received and completed, instead of something from an official book reviewer.

Waking God

Philip Harris and Brian Doe

"When I first began to read this book, I was actually reading 3 other books. Being a reviewer, I tend to do that a lot. I had put the book down and discovered my 18 year old daughter had taken it and had begun to read it. We both LOVE this book. I like that for once, someone has had the kahuna's for lack of a better term to make people really think about life, their beliefs, where and how we came to be, etc. This book takes you on such a journey...the future, the Garden of Eden and every where in between. I generally get bored of books with great detail but with this one, I soaked up the information as quickly as I could read it. The non-human characters in this book were so vividly explained that I could see them and unlike in other books I have read, I actually connected with the non-human characters in this story. Their appearances aren't just detailed but their personalities are allowed to come to light. I love that. I think I finally found two authors who won't hesitate to say out loud what the rest of us are thinking. Kudo's to them both. Can't wait for the next two! I was asked to add more to this review and after some time of thinking about and going back and rereading some parts, I agree that this is a Spiritual/Religious thriller. I say this because at times, from one chapter to the next, you are taken to so many places and while that may sound confusing to some, I assure it is not. I think for some, they will get this book right away. I LOVE that someone had taken the steps to delve into the unknown and to bring their thoughts and beliefs on paper. I believe that when this trilogy is complete, it won’t be long before we see a movie(s) coming forth. I know that I sure would love to see it on film. OH! I forgot to add, and not to frighten anyone...Thus far, several people that have read this book have had bizarre events occur to them. None life threatening, but definitely bizarre events. Have we been taken closer to the truth than the Universe wants us to? We shall see. Read it for yourself."

Troy Hite's review of Waking God:

Waking God will grab your mind from the very first pages and run it through rapids of long unanswered possibilities that truely make one think about the worlds religious practices and beliefs as a whole.

My interview with Phil Harris:

What made you decide to write the book Waking God? Was it your idea originally or was it something that you and Brian Doe both came up with?

The idea for the book was mine but Brian came up with the title. When he did we both said, “YES!”  We intuitively knew that the title was going to take us, and hopefully the reader on a journey, one that we are still on as we work on the next book in the series. The genesis of the book extends back to my childhood. I was raised as a northern Baptist until the age of around 12. In the book, Andrew talks about a childhood incident when a priest would not let one of his friend’s attend a craft club because it was being held in the basement of a Baptist church. This is a true story that happened to me. I was very turned off to the Catholic religion at that point. I also noticed that the pews were always full around the holidays but a little sparse most of the time, especially in the summer. This added fuel to my spiritual fire and I began to notice the general hypocrisy of most people who attended church. Truthfully, in my early teens I began to read books on philosophy and purposely sought out religious debate with anyone willing to argue, or discuss. I found most people with a religious back round liked to argue. The whole notion of a wrathful, all powerful god that sought worship just made no sense. If IT knew we were going to screw up, why bother. If there really was EVIL, then IT must have created it. It just made no sense. Add to that the billions of dollars controlled by churches and their lack of action in dealing with things like genocide and other major world issues and you have a skeptic in the making. The whole 9/11 thing and the religious backlash kind of made the timing for the book right.

Why the title Waking God? What was the thought process behind it?

The title was an inspiration. A few points to mention and these deal with several debates with our editor. There are times in the book when we say ‘God,’ and ‘god.’ Our editor did not understand what we were trying to do.  We both believe that God is immanent in all things. Our consciousness is evolving to understand this concept as is witnessed by string theories and various spiritual movements. Actually, mystics have known this all along. The piece I wrote about the show Beyond Positive Thinking and movies like “What the Bleep…” and “The Secret” are more examples of this. The title implies that if humanity is to evolve to this higher state of awareness, we must awaken the God within us. As Jesus says, “Did I not say ye are gods?” It is not that we become gods, but rather God expresses part of Itself as and through us. The key here is not to confuse this concept with the god of the Bible. God, the Universe, the All has no wants or desires. We need to stop personifying this concept like people do when they misinterpret the Bible and the Qur’an.

What market were you hoping to attract with this book? I mean, being Pagan, I was like Waking God? Why would you send me a book to review called Waking God. It was after I read the book that I understood that the book wasn’t in all actuality ‘about’ God.

So, the book is about God, but not about god. Actually, we kind of trash god and attempt to explain the difference and how churches have purposely pushed the little ‘g’ god to further their own ends. We really did not write the book with a specific market in mind except we felt that there was and is growing dissatisfaction with religious institutions. In a way, I guess our target is those who are on the cusp of self discovery and who are looking to make some sense of an otherwise insane world.

It seems to me that each time Andrew ‘writes’ that he goes almost into a trance although in the book it appears that he has been sleeping when he writes?

You are very observant about Andrew and his writing. When he writes in his journals he does start in a trance like state but then he enters a dream-like world-the world of imagination where all things become possible and the world of higher states of awareness. Some call this the astral plane and it seems to the observer to be a sleep-like state.

This book takes the reader to so many places. For me…it was like The Matrix in the beginning when Mara was taken. Then I felt as though we were taken to another plane of existence and then Mantrella…the don…I was like…wow, now we are at the Godfather level! I have never read a book that took me to so many places so quickly without great confusion. Was this what you intended? Or is it just how it happened?

The fast trips to other places and dimensions was both intended and also guided. Some of these scenes were written independent of each other and yet they merged into a cohesive whole. Both Brian and I were often amazed at the synchronicity of events and the connections that were-given that much was written after I had moved from New York to Maine. It came together by design but it was not always our conscious design. Deus ex machina or some would say Diablo ex machina. I believe that those who can follow the events without being confused are truly into the mystic flow of the book. You “get it.” Some readers got lost in the jumps and were not sure what was happening. So far, those that have been able to get caught up with the flow have had personal revelations. Those that don’t still like the book, but more for the story than the message.

Again, with the fear of being repetitive, I am Pagan and there were times in this book where I was like YES! Someone gets it and then times when I was like huh? You made me think. I like that your book wasn’t about one religion but about religion and it’s origin as a whole. Anyone who reads this book will spend hours, days, MONTHS, pondering about what they have read because you and Brian Doe will have caused the thinking wheel to begin to spin. Was that your intention?

Every time we get a comment from a reader that says the book ‘made them think’ we feel that the message and the book is a success. Brian will say the same thing-our PRIMARY goal was to get people to think and to question. When Piers Anthony said, “It will make you think,” it brought a tear to my eye. This sentiment has been echoed by almost all of the book reviews. If you read the reviews on our web site you will see what I mean. Yes, this was indeed the intent and it is how I measure its success.

If I may ask, what are your religious beliefs? If your religious beliefs are strong, have you done the thinking wheel process having brought so many questions to the surface about religion?

I covered my early religious background in question 1 so I will bring that up to date. I have explored many religious beliefs and have found that the underlying theme of all of them is the same. What has messed up is the institutionalization of the religions. If people stuck to spiritual discussion and not created the organization, we would be better off. We once owned a New Age store and I read almost all of the books we carried. We have hosted, in the past, spiritual study groups that explored everything from crystals to light and sound healing; the study of various belief systems from Buddhism to Sufi mysticism. I am a member and have been a member of numerous mystical societies. I believe in Gnosis and I see the wheel as a Spiral.

Several reviewers have for lack of a better term…strange experiences after reading this book. Any thoughts on that matter?

If you intend to build a new house on the ground of the old, the existing structure must give way for the new. Those who get into the flow of the book are subconsciously tearing down the old house.

I said in my review that I believed that you tapped into something that perhaps the Universe wasn’t ready for us to know and the reaction has been the ‘strange experiences’ . Do you agree? Has anything strange happened to you or to Brian Doe?

There have been odd experiences but it is not because the Universe does not want us to Know. It is we who fear Truth. The reviewer at BookPleasures.com started his review by saying, “What if every Truth you have ever been told was really a mosaic of falsehoods? What if every religious institution that preached salvation was actually and agent of oppression? …this book reminds us that there are other ways of looking at the world…” When a book like WAKING GOD comes along and throws your world into spiritual chaos, things tend to happen. Without exception, everyone I know that embarked upon a mystical journey has had their life- temporarily-thrown into turmoil. Divorce, bankruptcy, depression, accidents…manifested as a way for the subconscious mind to derail the journey. In seeking to protect its deeply ingrained beliefs, it creates turmoil. Some call this The Dark Knight of the Soul. But those who stay on the path find that the darkness was but illusion in order to better see the light. Notan, Yin-Yang-Polarities-are controlling factors in the manifest world, if we let them. This is where WAKING GOD echoes the famous words-“to be, or not to be…” Our lives couldn’t be stranger if we tried. Every day is a lesson in taking conscious control of our reality and manifesting our highest spiritual goals. What most fear is being responsible for all the world-after all-religions have told people for thousands of years that we are at the mercy of ‘g’od.

Mr. Harris, I’d like to thank you for doing this interview with me. I look forward to speaking to you again!

My interview with Brian Doe:

What made you decide to write the book Waking God? Was it your idea originally or was it something that you and Brian Doe both came up with?

How we got started with WG is an interesting story.  I had previously published a book titled Barely and Gold, and one morning Phil came into my classroom and declared that if I wanted to write a good book, I should consider writing something that had to do with the angels giving up on humanity because mankind has grown so awful.  I told him that I would entertain the idea somewhat.  Not long after, maybe a few days, he appeared in my room again, only this time he actually had something written!  From that point on, we started exchanging ideas and eventually writing chapters, which ultimately became WG.

Why the title Waking God? What was the thought process behind it?

The title is based on the concept that each and every one of us can "wake" the god within ourselves.  More physically, it refers to the notion that the biblical Adam is attempting to dream himself into existence, thus waking himself as God.  The title actually came to me in a dream or some other form of restless slumber.  When I awoke, I truly believed that I had subconsciously worked out a major block of the plot.  It was very strange.

What market were you hoping to attract with this book? I mean, being Pagan, I was like Waking God? Why would you send me a book to review called Waking God? It was after I read the book that I understood that the book wasn’t in all actuality ‘about’ God.

We were hoping to attract members of a general, literate audience, especially those willing to look inside themselves and question the dogma and institutional brainwashing that afflicts them.  We have discovered that for the most part the general audience has read the book, everyone from high school students to Baptists to pagans.  And believe it or not, Enlightenment has flourished!

It seems to me that each time Andrew ‘writes’ that he goes almost into a trance although in the book it appears that he has been sleeping when he writes?

Yes, because it is in a state where he is detached from the physical illusion that he can commune with Actuality.  Too much surrounding us everyday distracts us from seeing beyond our own cars and money.  The idea of persuading the Self into a "trance" is as ancient as the soul.  Buddhism and other eastern religions still make it an integral part of their spirituality.  Here, there is no difference.  In order for one to speak with the inner god, one must clear all pointless distractions from the equation.  Remember, beyond the gods is silence.

What we intended and what happened were sometimes two different events.  Phil and I have no doubts that we were divinely inspired and guided through the process.  We did, however, intend to offer all of these various places because each one offers a very significant piece to the over puzzle.  The reader who pursues the meaning of each place will satisfy her spiritual curiosity.  "Let he who has ears to hear, hear; and he whose has eyes to see, see."

Again, with the fear of being repetitive, I am Pagan and there were times in this book where I was like YES! Someone gets it and then times when I was like huh? You made me think. I like that your book wasn’t about one religion but about religion and it’s origin as a whole. Anyone who reads this book will spend hours, days, MONTHS, pondering about what they have read because you and Philip Harris will have caused the thinking wheel to begin to spin. Was that your intention?

We were not writing and did not write about religion, regardless of the claim.  Nor are we preaching a new spirituality.  Moreover, we were never concerned about the personal beliefs, faiths, followings of our readers.  It didn't matter.  Those who read WG will find something to relate to, and something to think about.  (Just wait until you read Book 2!)

If I may ask, what are your religious beliefs? If your religious beliefs are strong, have you done the thinking wheel process having brought so many questions to the surface about religion?

I come from a conservative Catholic family.  Now, however, I consider myself, if anything, agnostic.  I know there is something higher than myself, and I know that it includes the collective reflection of myself.  What else do I need to believe?  Writing WG, nonetheless, was the most difficult process of introspection and personal growth I have ever been through.  Only when I began this project with Phil did I realize how painful and fulfilling it would be.  I certainly recognized that I was still holding onto some old Catholic dogma and somewhat of a refusal to disengage myself from dogma.  I think differently now.

Several reviewers have for lack of a better term…strange experiences after reading this book. Any thoughts on that matter?

It continues to be strange.  We never know what to expect.  I can tell you this, however:  I have not been able to sleep during a full moon since completing the first book.  Also, I have developed an intense feeling of safety and comfort when the night comes that I never had before.  I can't completely explain it; I only know that WG and these events are somehow related.

I said in my review that I believed that you tapped into something that perhaps the Universe wasn’t ready for us to know and the reaction has been the ‘strange experiences’ . Do you agree? Has anything strange happened to you or to Philip Harris?

Great review, by the way, and eternal thanks.  I'm glad someone finally had the kahunas to use the word kahunas.

At any rate, I believe I answered this above.  Yet, I don't know if we should be so easily swayed by strange events and immediately attribute them to the book.  Maybe the fact of the matter is that we are now more AWARE of these ideas, events that have ALWAYS been taking place but that we never tuned ourselves into.  Of course, this is only a thought.

There are no guarantees of wisdom contained herein.

Mr. Doe, thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview!
